Communicate is a game to improve skills and understanding around communication. It can be use both in the everyday classroom as part of the English language program or in Drama classes.
By capitalising on every young person’s natural curiosity and ability to act out events, Communicate uses drama to develop social and interpersonal skills for connecting people to their world. In an environment conducive to reflection, participants are able to remove themselves from their own life experiences, create a deeper understanding of other people’s perspectives and develop empathy for those around them.
Students love the way it moves quickly and how they are actively involved in the program. Students are creative and inventive with the program and build cars from bodies, talk in foreign languages, go to far away places and learn the importance of communicating with each other all in a lesson.
Communicate utilises the following elements to make the game:
- Activity cards for Drama or English lessons
- Scenarios of everyday activities to act out
- Awareness of Communication Skills
- Communicate element cards to highlight communication behaviour
- Teaching of specific communication and relationship
- Skills and self evaluation procedures.
- Checklists for different levels – both observers and players can assess themselves.
- Encouraging group responsibility for support and learning
- Gives every member of the group a role in providing specific and meaningful feedback
As with all learning situations, it is not possible to single out particular children and tell them they are poor at communication. Somehow, they need to see it for themselves and be supported to change of their own accord. Only then can they learn to try new ways of relating. The Communicate Game has been intensively trialled and passed by the toughest critics, young people themselves.
The game is available for purchase from the Stride website and is $44 (inc GST)
We have also developed a teacher training program for Communicate. The Communicate teacher training program is a half-day workshop where teachers are trained on how to use drama to teach life skills to students. As well as working through the different activities and being trained on how to run the program at their school, teachers are taken through the building blocks of good communication that form the basis for the program.
