CyberS@vvy has been developed by Stride to tackle the growing issue of cyber-bullying in schools. The program, like Stride's other anti-bullying programs, looks at the problem in a holistic way, involving young people as part of the solution rather than demonising them or the technology they use.
The program uses activity based exercises that encourage young people to understand what is cyber-bullying and the consequences, both moral and legal, surrounding cyber-bullying
The activities provide a fun way to learn leading into debriefing sessions where the lessons learnt in the activity can be discussed as a whole group. The program looks at:
• Aspects of technology.
• Consequences of cyber-bullying.
• The lack of empathy that can be displayed by cyber-bullying.
• Digital footprints.
• Penalties associated with cyber-bullying.
• Confiding in someone they trust.
CyberS@vvy seeks to build the confidence and resilience of young people to empower them to combat cyber-bullying whether it is happening to them or a friend. The program also seeks to educate young people on how cyber-bullying is really affecting those on the other side of the screen.
CyberS@vvy is provided as a half-day professional development workshop for teachers or directly to students as a two-hour workshop and as part of the workshop teachers receive a manual containing background research, information and structured activities should they want to reinforce or revisit elements of the program.
Stride has also incorporated CyberS@vvy material into its popular bullying prevention programs Revved Up, MPower Girls and Peer Support.
