Environmental Mentoring Project:
Connecting Young People to the Environment

We all know how important it is for young people to care for the environment. Stride runs the Environmental Mentoring Project to provide opportunities for young people to have a supportive mentor while undertaking conservation and environmental activities in their community. The overall aim of the project is to increase community and interpersonal connection, decrease anti-social behaviour and build self esteem and resilience.
Environmental activities may include canoeing, native animal breeding, sand rejuvenation and planting projects. Projects are designed to stimulate young people's interest and understanding in their local environment, while providing a wonderful opportunity for mentors to help foster goal setting, skill development, communication and teamwork amongst young people.
The program works closely with local schools and council groups to provide an interesting and alternative learning path, in a time where environmental issues are of great importance to society. The skills gained through participation in the project will enhance young people's future education and may even lead to them considering conservation as a sustainable career option.
