Mentoring Through Music:
Connecting Young People to Education through Music.
The Mentoring through Music program helps to inspire young people to continue with their education by engaging them in a unique school-based music program which involves musicians who are trained as mentors working directly with identified young people within a school setting. Weekly sessions are scheduled around the school timetable. During these sessions music mentors teach young people an instrument of choice, while offering support and guidance for other aspects of their life. The program is of great benefit to disengaged, disadvantaged young people of various backgrounds who would not normally have access to music lessons.
‘I do believe the program is having a positive effect on the kids in both a behavioural and musically technical way’ – Music Mentor
The program not only sets the foundations for healthy relationships and the young person's continued interest in music studies, but also gives participants a positive outlook for the future and appreciation for the value of having a good education.
Stride Foundation is currently providing Indigenous young people in Mildura and in several disadvantaged schools of northern Melbourne.
