On the Ball

“If you could see the smiles on the kids' faces. They just love playing sport, they could play here all night. There are a lot of talented kids here - they just get missed.”   Umoona Sport & Recreation Officer (Coober Pedy, SA)

In remote communities suffering from geographical isolation, the message most often repeated is that there is often little or nothing for the children and young people to do outside of school and most especially during holidays.  Limited opportunities to take part in recreational activities either after school or during holidays can leave children and young people bored and vulnerable to falling into bad behaviour - and in the longer term, less ready to return to school when term-time resumes.

On the Ball is a series of basketball workshops which are delivered in remote communities during school holidays.  The workshops are led by well-respected sporting role-models who enthuse and inspire the children and young people aged 6-15, signing up for the program.

On the Ball workshops are hugely popular and not only encourage active participation in sport and recreation, they also build general competencies including teamwork, respect for others, goal-setting and leadership skills.  Most importantly, they provide an important piece in the jigsaw of providing children and young people in remote and disadvantaged communities with the best chances in life.

On the Ball is currently being delivered across the remote regions of South Australia.
